The Plaatsduinen are a 35-hectare massif of dunes which were developed in the late Middle Ages and border Oostduinkerke-Dorp. The local dialect refers to 'the platse' as the village centre, hence the fitting name.

Here, in the southern part of the area, we encounter groves, while elsewhere vegetated dunes and shifting dunes occur.

The Plaatsduinen connect to the area of Spelleplekke and the larger Ter Yde. Originally, they ran eastwards as far as Hannecartbos.
